Justin Norman interviewed artist extraordinaire Aaron Horkey at his “Midwestern Heart” solo art show in Minneapolis recently. Hi-Fructose magazine is presenting the interview in two parts. Part one covers Aaron’s influences and and more about the artshow itself and what went into selecting the individual pieces. Here’s a Flickr page containing a few dozen more photos from the show.
Part two is a fascinating step-by-step look at how he creates a poster. He used a Genghis Tron poster made back in 2008 as the example and takes us through all of the layers and minutae of making one of these masterpieces. The layering is quite insane and it’s been a while since I’ve come across a process that was so involved.
I’ve been a fan of Horkey’s for a few years now and in 2008 I bought quite a few of his prints. I briefly wrote about him in my 5 reasons to draw in pen and ink piece. I remember the mad panic as soon as a new one would go live. They would sell out within an hour and be up on ebay within the week. His stuff is a little pricier now so I’m glad that I got in a few years back.
